Why You Might Be Struggling

by Mike Litman

It just beats up so many people.

Badly.

“Mike, what are you talking about?”

Follow me here amigo, this is important.

For 7 years, I ran around in circles. Circles.

I was going nowhere. Real fast.

Eventually, I got my head out of the sand and started
figuring things out, though this is important.

I see too many people, thousands of people, struggling
unnecessarily.

And for many, it’s NOT their fault.

Let me explain.

What worked for many in school, college, and as an employee
DOESN’T work as an entrepreneur.

People are struggling and one of the BIGGEST reasons is
they’re getting beat up by ‘this’.

What is ‘this’?

Here’s the answer:

PERFECTION

Yes.

Making PERFECTION your goal is the quickest way to fail as an
entrepreneur.

The quickest.

Here’s what happens.

We build a mindset over the years.

Our teachers say, be perfect in school and on your tests.

Our boss says, be perfect at your job or I’ll fire you.

Then people bring this ‘perfection mindset’ to their business
and they STAND STILL.

They wait to act until everything is perfect.

Perfect. Perfect. Perfect.

What a bunch of NONSENSE. This mindset doesn’t work in the
real entrepreneurial world.

This is NO SUCH THING as perfect.

Get going.

Here’s what I did.

When I was struggling years ago, I made a change.

Follow me here.

In school, they tell you to shoot for an ‘A’. (Grades in
school are A, B, C, and D)

In business, you now know that doesn’t work.

What I did is when my ideas got to a ‘C’ level I took ACTION.

Action.

I entered the marketplace.

I got feedback. I saw what worked and what didn’t. I then
improved.

You can’t grow by doing nothing.

When your ideas, prospecting scripts, books, etc…are at a
‘C’ level, TAKE ACTION.

You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it
going.

Aiming for perfection before you begin will destroy you.

Get going amigo.

You can do it.

The world needs your gifts. Badly.

Love Ya! You’re The Best!

Your Coach,

Michael

P.S. You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it
going.

Hey Mike!

Thanks for this reminder once again!

I can’t get enough of “You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going!” lol

Anyways, I’ve been telling my readers about your motto as well and they love it.

To make it clearer, what I tell them is that even when you strive for perfection, what will happen is that you’ll be striving perception on imagined circumstances.

Being an entrepreneur this past few months have opened my mind to this.

You and I both know that circumstances is NEVER what we perceive it to be, right Mike?

So I think we should all remember that perfection comes with ready, fire, aim!

And not aim, aim, aim, aim.. and never fire ;)

Greg May 6, 2008 at 10:40 am

That’s just what I needed to hear today! Thank you!

John Watson May 6, 2008 at 10:49 am

Great advice which I, and I expect many more, need to
keep hearing again and again. It has recently taken me
5 months to follow Michael Green’s 20/20 plan which is supposed to take only about a month. Probably, I have delayed myself by looking for A’s before I really get going on marketing my lastest product.

Thanks!

Hi Mike!

Thank you so much for the reminder!! Perfection has held me back for too long. I always worked hard in school and then in the coroporate world to get things “right” and the more I did this, the more I “needed” to keep that perfection going. It became not only what I expected of myself but what I felt others expected of me, too.

Looking back, I now see how trying to be perfect limited me in school and in my corporate positions. It caused me to hold myself back and not take risks since I felt I was not “perfect” enough.

I am now working on overcoming this perfectionist thinking and as an entrepreneur I have had to continually repeat your montra “You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going” to keep myself moving forward. I don’t want to continue to limit myself any longer!!!! Thanks again for the encouragement and helping me see the truth.

You’re always on time Mike, thank you so very much because this is just what I needed to hear today!

Scott Hengtgen May 6, 2008 at 12:37 pm

Mike so true. Old believe systems can and will take you down. It seems that a lot of people have trouble looking at things from a different prospective. keep up the great work.

Thanks for the wake-up call.

Kate May 6, 2008 at 12:41 pm

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!! I just read your blog and this is exactly what I needed today. I have been “struggling”. I have ALWAYS had an entrepreneurial mindset and I am also a perfectionist 95% of the time (I must admit that). I have consumed so much information and now putting it all together is where I am at and am feeling a little stuck. I have such an enormous drive and level of commitment; this sometimes can become overwhelming. Thank you for clearing my mind and grounding me with your blog!!

John Jensen May 6, 2008 at 12:59 pm

Mike, for 30 years I have been developing home based businesses… I agree TOTALLY with what you say. Perfection will never come because if we wait for that perfect moment we will SCREW IT UP because we are not perfect. Daily Action is the Key to our development and SUCCESS!

Dear Mike
It is very encouraging to hear you tell people to take “action”, it is obvious and profound at the same time. It takes a thoughtful person to say it the way you do.

Thanks Mike for the reminder that perfection, especially when you are trying to “get it going”, is the enemy of the good. When I was starting my side business for skin care products especially for laser-treated patients, if
I had waited for every product for every skin condition to be lined up, I’d still be waiting to start 4 years later. Perefection can certainly be the ultimate goal still, but it’s a killer in the beginning.–Doctor J–www.mainelaserskincare.com

jesai May 6, 2008 at 2:19 pm

It is a great mantra which causes action.
I used to work with academics who loved ideas because it gave them something to discuss, debate and criticize. The only thing is they never would test an idea in the real world, put it out there. or by the time they did it was so flat and consensus driven that it had no passion.
Just get it going and we find out so fast how to shape it to get it better. So true. Learn by doing not thinking about.

Kathy May 6, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Hi Mike,

Just wanted to let you know that I had gotten an email from you some time back on this very subject and it really hit me, so I wrote “You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going” on a sticky note and stuck it on my computer. I started my home based business in February a year ago and I spent way too much time getting ready to do it. I wanted my office fixed just right and I wanted to know everything I needed to know in order to be successful and I spent so much time getting ready, I forgot to do the money making activities. I read your email one day and it really changed my life. I kept saying to myself -”Kathy, just do something, even if it is not right or perfect” and I have to tell you, it really paid off. My business is growing by leaps and bounds and I still have my little sticky note on my computer so I won’t get off track!

Thanks again,
Kathy

Thank you so much Mike. You came as a savior. I was going to give up. I am struggling with an e-Book I want to be perfect before releasing it and after several months I am still fine tuning it….end of story. I will give myself another chance. Thank you so much. Denise (Brussels – Belgium)

Andy Haspel May 6, 2008 at 5:28 pm

Thanks Mike. Words of wisdom as always from you!!!

Roger Omberg May 6, 2008 at 5:32 pm

Hey, MIKE
I hear You loud & clear, Sir. I wonder if You would take a peek at my web site-jes for grins, & tell me what you see, if its too perfect, or what? http://www.tru-stow.ispeedway.com Any way I would like to think that maybe one sales would pick up…

Tim May 6, 2008 at 6:02 pm

Oh yeah, I recognize that one, which is closely akin to…Hey, I’ll just wait for it to come to me through sheer destiny, the universe, as a result of my mantra, prayers whatever!! No it never just comes calling, but rather disguises itself through the many people we interact with as we take “any action”, which according to Tony Robbins produces “emotion”, which leads to further action…and eventually as Mike so succinctly put it “get in the marketplace” and see what works and what doesn’t, “refining” all along, and in this way perfecting it…that’s what I’ve started doing, and will do my utmost to do ahead in new adventures yet to be realized…
Thanks Mike~ I learned something here today, or rather was reminded of my past ways of wasting time…precious time.

Tom Belt May 6, 2008 at 6:38 pm

Mike, this is such great advice! The time will never be right . . . the ducks will never be all in a row. You just have to do it now and take action. I live by your credo, “You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going.” Thanks again, Mike.

Kelly May 6, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Hi Mike,
Thanks once again for a great post/reminder!
I fussed around for over a year trying to get everything “just right” before I began. Once I finally went “live” with my site it was so much more fun and truly when the learning began. Almost like studying about how to ride a bike just isn’t the same as actually getting on one and riding! My lil’ business is growing each month and I’m learning via trial and error what works for me/my customer. If I’d stayed in my getting it “just right” phase I STILL wouldn’t have a live website nor having all the fun I’m having now!
Keep up the great work!
Kelly :-)

Hi Mike! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You are truly amazing! There is never a day that I don’t use some of the things that I’ve learned from your inspiration and encouragement. I have been stuck and am trying to find a way out. I know that I will eventually get out, but in the meantime I’m not trying to get it right, I’m simply trying to get it going. Thanks again for all of the good that you.

I needed that tonight…tomorrow morning I’m going to act on that which I have been putting off till I felt more “organized”…you’re right- only by making my contacts and starting the plan will I ever reach any level of “organized”…thanks

Vinod Sawlani May 6, 2008 at 9:07 pm

Mike thanks again, you have a way to say things that actually move us, it gets us to introspect, which automatically leads to us to take action. Action leads to results, results to confidence, confidence to success!! Thanks a ton Mike !

Jeanne May May 6, 2008 at 11:55 pm

hey Mike…

I can so relate to this post Mike! Perfectionism is a major stumbling block — a really difficult habit to break! But it isn’t until you get into your brain nothing changes until you take action — you will remain stuck. Action gives invaluable feedback and it’s amazing what happens after that.

Great stuff!

nudgeme May 7, 2008 at 4:48 am

Hi Mike

This is such a great piece of advice – and your strapline’s perfect about just getting going(pardon the pun!) So often the fear of not getting it all just right holds us back from taking any action – far better to just act and then see any mistakes as lessons to learn from and move on. It’s taken me ages to get that very simple point so thanks for the reminder.

All the best

Dear Mike,

I too thank you for this crucial reminder to do something in my home based business every day with real people and not to just keep trying to get organized and to learn more and more in theory or preparation. We learn from life as well as from books, and we need to keep a balance between the two. Acts, not words, make the day!

Blessings,

Dianne

Hi Mike…just what I needed to hear today. I have been procrastinating…another no no because of wanting to do something perfectly or not at all…
the impetus to JUST DO SOMETHING!
thanks again! You’re a gem!

Corinne Balante May 9, 2008 at 5:59 pm

Mike,
WOW, you sent this to me a few months ago and at the time I needed to hear exactly that. I was stalled waiting to know everything in my new business, learning every answer to have just-in-case! After reading it I got busy, made my FIRST PHONE CALL and singed them was on a roll! Then I hit a snag and it stopped me again to CORRECT MY MISTAKE!!! I CAN’T believe it MIKE I open this up today and there you are again telling me what I know I should be doing! THANK YOU SO MUCH! It is FATE that I read this tonight as I have been in PRAY ALL DAY TODAY! GOD BLESS YOU MIKE! Keep Kicking My Behind!!! I will see you at the TOP!!!!

Dear Mike’

you’re absulotely right. ACTION ACTION ACTION. good ideas are worthless if no action is done. one of my mistake is i am always waiting for the right timing. but it should not be the action to be done but go ahead with your plan and make adjustment along the way.

Thank you for your advice that reminds me of my mistakes.
