Why Self Discipline Is Tough

by Mike Litman

For so many years of my life my self-discipline was terrible.

This lack of self-discipline kept me running around in
circles, procrastinating like a king, and always chasing the
‘latest greatest idea’.

Have you ever been ‘there’?

I’m glad I’m not ‘there’ anymore and I work daily on bringing
more self-discipline into my life.

Here’s the question.

Whenever you read a great success story, from Tiger Woods,
Oprah, Spielberg, Frank McKinney, to famous generals and
more, you always here ‘this’ mentioned.

“They brought great discipline to their work.”

What do the most successful people in the world ‘have’ that
allow them to bring more discipline into their lives than
the rest of the population?

There might be 10 answers. Probably more.

I’m going to focus today on what I believe is the MOST
IMPORTANT in order to bring more self-discipline into your
life.

If you look at the globe, you see many things.

You see millions of people unhappy with their careers, you
see millions of people looking for meaning in their lives,
and you see millions of people that have accepted the status
quo in their lives.

If that’s the choice people make, great, I know you’re
looking for more in your life though.

How do we make self-discipline much easier for ourselves?

How do we improve our discipline 1% each day?

What do the ‘greats’ do that other’s don’t?

The mass of people lead visionless lives.

Read this again.

The mass of people lead visionless lives.

I did as well for a long time. A long time.

Remember, what was written thousands of years ago.

“Where there is no vision, the people perish.”

The word ‘perish’ in the past was translated to ‘throw off
constraints.”

“Mike, what does that exactly mean?”

In means that when we don’t have a VISION for our lives, we
throw off self-discipline, self-control, and order. (I’d read
this 2x)

You see, without a VISION we replay the limitations and
negative recurring patterns of our past.

Without using our IMAGINATION to build the better you, we use
the lack in our past to keep us on a fear driven merry go
round.

No fun. Not at all.

You, I, us, WE must do the inner work.

I don’t care what your inner critic has to say. You were
BORN with unique gifts, purposes, and talents.

You were born to lead.

You were born to fulfill a GREAT VISION.

Maybe it’s being a great parent, a great business person, or
great entertainer. It doesn’t matter.

Build the vision for your life. It doesn’t have to be
perfect. Let it develop. Cultivate it.

Build it. Hold it. Pursue it.

The greatest gift in pursuing your vision, is WHO you become
in the process. (money is important, though in itself it will
never give you meaning.)

Be the master artist in your life. Create a living, breathing
masterpiece called your life.

Start with a bright, clear vision. Watch discipline and order
enter your life in a greater way.

I believe in -you-. The thousands of other people reading
this right now BELIEVE IN YOU.

(Group high five)

Your greatest days are ahead of you and can’t wait to see you
too.

Build your vision 1% today.

Love Ya! You’re The Best!

Your Coach,

Michael

I don't know how you do it, Mike, but the very thing I'm struggling with on any given day is the very thing you write about. It is ALWAYS a great opportunity to slow down, get a handle, and enjoy some great advice – with actionable information. Thanks so much!

Mike, thanks for a great post. I believe you are right about self discipline. As a business coach, one of the most difficult things I have seen among new entrepreneurs is taking responsibility for self discipline. So many people are used to being told what to do, told what vision to have.

Your comments are so refreshing. I enjoyed them and look forward to applying the 1% improvement to my discipline and vision.

The only vision most people have is television. Excellent post man. We make self discipline tough when we dont have our 'why' in mind. The why is the key that will help us to achieve any how.

Thanks Mike for the encouragement that most of us need.It is so easy to get derailed and to sustain the energy and the focus we do require discipline for everything we do if we are to be successful at it and I know that I do need it.I feel the only thing that I was really discipline at was going to college and completing that journey in New York some thirty odd years ago.I still require that discipline so that I can forge ahead with this business and so I appreciate your encouragement to us and the experience that you share with us that you had. Thanks again

Thanks Mike I needed to read I'm not alone. I guess I also needed to remember if I just take a small step or a little at a time it can be done.As the cliche goes Rome was not built in a day.

This is so true, and my life has worked exactly that way. When I have a vision, set goals, have the right mind frame, and have committed, I have grown and excelled. Other times when I have grown lazy or gotten a bit down and lost sight of my vision, I didn't just stagnate, I started slipping backwards. I have been on disability and am starting to feel better, so it is time to create a new vision for me-it may start slow, but it will be a start.

Thankyou for this reminder. self discipline can lead one to the zenith. but it's not easy to practice. it demands a lot of sacrifices.

Hi Mike, Thanks for the motivation and inspiration on Self Discipline.
I suffer from much procrastination and I have been just planning not acting on getting out of this dreaded disease, as I may call it. I am a big dreamer but not a 'doer'. With this clear vision Idea, I am sure I will succeed in disciplining myself and achieving what I look forward with a positive outlook to life with more charged action.
Thanks a million,
Nicholas

Most important of the entire note: Build your vision…..1 ONE 1 % today. Just 1%!!!
A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step. Then you're on your way.

Alfred Jarry October 2, 2009 at 5:47 am

Thanks for not giving up on me, Mike. Will do 1% today.

Errol October 2, 2009 at 7:09 am

Thanks Michael just what I needed to here today, and I am sure it's the same for hundreds of other people. Good job.

annhession October 2, 2009 at 8:21 am

Right on the money, as usual! Here's my 1% for today: recreating my vision of my life five years from now. I haven't “revisited” that vision recently — it's time to go back to the future, so to speak! Getting psyched just writing about it, so off I go. Later!

frucelestine October 2, 2009 at 11:09 am

mike,
Thanks, that's what I(we) need to hear on Monday am the call to a better life starts inside.
What drives me is to be a better me. To do all that God put me here to do today!
Life improvement and goal setting and doing is like eating an elephant.
Just do it one bite at a time.

Mike
I was a bit late reading this one, but this is incredible, the 'ancient' statement is in the bible, the book of proverbs I think. I have had four short stories published to date, but since taking in this info from your messages I am sometimes writing several thousand words a night for a novel. I am getting it going. And once it is finished, I will get the marketing going, and if it fails I will keep going, with this story and the next.
Since I have been getting it going my personal productivity is soaring, and I am going to keep it going, and on and on. I am going to be so busy getting it going and keeping it going, that I won't have chance to listen to the voices of doubt, the junk beliefs from the past.

power to you and all who read these messages of inspiration from you.

John

I build this vision for my life but i left it behind thousand of times. I will clear it and do not leave it behind

Gregory Tudor December 20, 2009 at 4:54 am

I agree because my dad who unfortunately passed away in 2008 had great discipline whether he was doing one of his oil paintings or out metal detecting. he just continued patiently beavering away. he was so loved by most everyone who knew him. I wish I had dad's patients determination and self discipline. my sister and dad's neighbour set up a web site. so as to get dad's paintings known and its one of my goals to help get our dad Peter Tudor's beautiful art known to the world. I'm not sure if i m allowed to give his email address. Thanks Mike
