Perfection Gone Wild

by Mike Litman

(Move your chair in a bit closer. This is important.)

For 7 years of my entrepreneurial life I brought along with

me a group of ‘best friends’.

Let me share them with you.

Procrastination.

Scatterdness.

Frustration.

Indecision.

Inconsistency.

And my REAL best friend back then, PERFECTION.

For those 7 years, I couldn’t make 2 dimes as an entrepreneur

and all I did was run around in circles.

I knew I couldn’t break the pattern of entrepreneurial

failure until I beat down its being culprit.

That being PERFECTION.

I see so many good hearted people leaving their potential

untapped because they don’t take their ideas to the

marketplace.

Some of them are scared.

Others are afraid of what their family and friends might say.

Fear rises. Action decreases.

PERFECTION screams out for attention.

Aim for perfection as an employee.

AIM for ‘good enough’ as an entrepreneur who is just getting

going.

That’s what I did and everything changed for the better years

ago.

I bought into a philosophy years ago and I suggest you do the

same.

Here it is.

***You Don’t Have To Get It Right; You Just Have To Get It

Going.

Read this again. Even say it out loud.

***You Don’t Have To Get It Right; You Just Have To Get It

Going.

Yes, living this ‘idea’ changed everything for me.

It will do the same for you.

Remember, the best way to learn something is to teach it.

Teach someone this idea in the next 72 hours and you’ll ‘get

it’ at an even deeper level. You will.

I care about your success. I want you to experience greater

fulfillment, happiness, and success.

Now, GET GOING. You can do it.

I believe in you.

Love Ya! You’re The Best!

Your Coach,

Michael

P.S. You have what it takes to make a difference in 25,000

lives. Maybe more.

You Don’t Have To Get It Right; You Just Have To Ge

Dear Mike,

I fully agree with you that Perfection sometimes leads to total loss, if a time frame is not set out. The problem with Perfection is it is endless and no boundaries could be defined for it. Perfection itslef could only be the Act of The GOD Almighty. However, I am not against doing things in the best possible way but we need to remeber that the Time Frame is very Critical and no matter what we do to make things better in many ways, we are losing time in making other things get worse in other ways as well. Let us put a Dead Line for Perfection and Basic features to achieve within this Dead Line and close our work at this end. Otherwise, Consequences of delays will ruin all the Good Work that we have achieved.

I am recently trying to get cured of this Chronic Habit by defining a Dead Line and Basic Goals to be achieved and that is it.

Best Regards.

PERFECTION SHOULD BE TIME LIMITED & GOAL SETTED

Hey Mike!

I love these trademark “You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going” reminders =)

Btw, I think that teaching other people concept is really something important anyone reading this would like to take away from this post.

I have started to use this techniques and I run into things I didn’t know I had doubts about in my niche.

And for those online entrepreneurs out there, I believe mastering and conquering your content is probably the most important thing you need to have.

Thanks Mike!

Sometimes worrying about all the details keeps us from leaving the starting gate. Thanks for the “nudge.”

Hi Mike,

That is so true. Since the time I hear you say on one of your conference calls that “You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going”, it’s been a little mantra and reminder of for me.

It was the catalyst for getting the first ever voice recording up on my website. I’d thought about doing this for several years and not acually done it as I was going through the ‘where shall I record it, what should it be about, how am I going to record it, etc’. During your EHH conference call I commited to the group that within the month I’d have the recording up on my site and I told myself to ‘just get it started’ and that I could easily change it at a later date.

Thanks for the inspiration Mike!!

Yep Mike, in other words…..”a journey of a thousand miles begins with the first step!!” Right?

Hi Mike,
My English have been picket up in the ports, airports, later talking to people outside the country, and to improve the language I started reading books and papers. This means a lot of syntax and some time typing errors in my writing.

Few months ago, I though it was the time to spread my wings outside the country, and I start translating some of my artices pertaining to the bees conditions into English and placing them in my blogspot, knowing that there should be a lot of even wrong expressions.

I was sceptical in pushing the bottom “publish your post” for couple of days and then I recalled your famous moto “You don’t have to get it right but get it going” and I said the hell with it. I Pushed then the bottom.

Few days later I received an overseas call, my first overseas order was placed, my first distributor outside the country was a fact.

I had even to answer the question about my English. I indeed apologized but I said “one of the most valuable quotes I ever been reading a year ago sent by my mentor Mike Litman it was “You don’t have to get it right; You jst have to get it going”, so this how you discover what would be the benefits for for you and for your bees.

To cut the long story short. My new friend offered to me his assistanse to correct the most importand articles and to sent them to me in order to re-publish the articles in more professional manner.

You are absolutely right amigo.

We do nt need to get it right or perfect. We just have to DO IT.

Keep going….
Thsank you so much

As a professional engineer I have problems with this.
This is the attitude that caused the death of 14 servicemen in a British Nimrod Aircraft that exploded after in-flight refuelling (leaking fuel near a very hot pipe). It was going (flying) but it wasn’t right and there were senior people who knew what was not right about it long before the accident happened.

Of course I understand the message and I reckon you have put the finger on one of my great problems trying to succeed in a non-engineering business environment!

Dear Mike

Thank you for all your help and support. I will start from today to apply this rule.

Gail June 1, 2008 at 3:47 am

Mike, I would agree to a point, but you know, you should get things right, but they don’t always have to be perfect. I like the mantra, but will change it to, “You don’t have to get it perfect, just get it going.”

There is a long lay of track between right and perfect. Like listing something on Ebay. You could spend 30 minutes measuring and researchng a four dollar item, and never have time to post it, or you could give it your best shot and in the same 30 minutes have a half dozen items up for sale. But, thanks for the lead. Now I will go take your advice! Gail

Terry June 1, 2008 at 5:32 am

You are just absolutely terrific!

That’s right! You are! Now, go to the mirror, smile at yourself, and say that to the one looking back at you, keep saying it until you’re comfortable with it, and then go ask someone this question:

“Hey, has anyone told you you’re terrific today?”

Smiles will start filling your world if you’ll do this!

Thanks Mike! You’re terrific!

John Clark June 1, 2008 at 6:11 am

Mike,

That has always been one of my favorite sayings…

“You don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going.”

You were the first person I’ve heard say it.

I’ve found, even with myself, we tend to wait for the right time to start things.

Where in reality the right time to start anything you desire is…

RIGHT NOW!

We need to strike while the iron is hot and never look back. With a crystal clear desire and a plan to give the service or product that we are going to give in return for that desire, we need to launch immediately.

Not at the first of the month, or the beginning of the year or the middle of the year.

Start NOW!

“You don’t have to get right, you just have to get it going.”

Good advice, once again. Many times I have delayed starting a project trying to get it just right only to end up running out of time and having to throw it together just to get it done in time. It would be a lot less stressful to just do it.

Fear of success and selfworth are the two main reasons that we think we need perfection?
It is a great place and journey in which to rest ourselves and feel justified.
Making the frist step and learning and growing is the key to success. Believing in yourself and others.
It’s all about intention.. what do I intend for myself..
Success? Failure? Peace? happiness?
Getting going is the only way your gonna find out where you’ve been!

Kevin Williams June 1, 2008 at 12:40 pm

Mike as always, you are an inspiration to many and right on in regards to the one thing standing in the way of most people… themselves. Get it going and keep it going and perfect practice will bring perfect results.

Henry June 1, 2008 at 1:45 pm

its a catch-22. as professionals, we want to be accurate and sharp, so we procrastinate until we’re perfect – which isnt ever going to be. Therefore, we dont get going.

Molly Assad June 1, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Your blog inspired me to write a chapter in my book
Declaring War on Depression. I simply think that depression is focusing on your past instead of creating your future. My website mentioned above will gather some of the top motivational speakers of our time in Orlando June 19-June 21st. Again we have to create our future by focusing on what we want and not what we don’t have.

Christine June 1, 2008 at 4:43 pm

Hi Mike,
I have to say, you have had a great influence in my life! I grabbed your “you don’t have to get it right, you just have to get it going” and ran with it. A year ago in March, I started with my second direct sales company and did so with hestitance. I didn’t have a lot of “faith” in myself. After hearing your CD, I was very motivated and thought, what do I have to lose? I put your plan into action and promoted to the first level of the management level in record time, three months. I then promoted out my first team the following month. I was amazed!! People asked me how I did it and I told them about listening to your CD. I have lost some momentum with my business for personal reasons, but now ready to get going again, and yep, using the same words!

Kathy June 1, 2008 at 7:43 pm

Hi Mike,

This is my favorite saying and I have it posted on the front of my computer. It keeps me on track and reminds me to do something everyday that will move my business forward and keep me in the money making activities that I need to be doing so I can achieve my dreams sooner than later!

Hi Mike,

I have only just realised what it is possibly that causes the resistance to putting something ‘out there’ when you do not feel that it is ready.

I think that for me it is concern at what people might think or say! So, anyway, yesterday I took the step of launching my website even though it is not finished because I just know that otherwise I will be waiting for the ‘perfection moment’ and it will never happen!

I wonder how many others have felt the same thing.

Thanks again

Hi Mike,
When you have a hard earn money in your hand you have to accertain you will make it right. Easy to say ‘don’t be afraid of losing’, ‘it is a medicine for success’ but when you have nothing else to back you up since soon you are retiring up, homework and paperwork count!

Hi Mike,
Your catch phrase ‘You don’t have to get it right – you just have to get it going’ has inspired a cartoon. It’s a stone-age man you has invented the car. He hasn’t perfected it – he’s just got it going!
Have a look it might give you a smile…

Mike, you are correct. Procrastination, brought on by fear of failure and doing thing in a scatter-shot pattern, has held me back. But now I am prepared to just get started. I have over 240 domain names (and the list keeps growing). I was afraid of not getting it right, information overload (paralysis by analysis), but now I am ready to take that leap- thanks on big part to you!

This is the best piece of advice I got this year!!!

Thank you!
Thank you!
Thank you!

I fell in the same rut and going in circles accomplishing nothing.

I found your quote quoted in James Yii's ebooks http://www.The-Short-Cut.com.

I placed it in my logon screen and it's the first thing I see each time I turn on my laptop.

It made me think and finally say to myself, “Now, I can do it! Nothing's going to stop me! My past is past. I'll move forward and not care if I make mistakes or fail. I'M NOT AFRAID ANYMORE!!!”

I AM UNSTOPPABLE!!!

Thanks a mil Mike!!!

Keep up the good work!

All the best,

Eric
