Chasing vs. Serving

by Mike Litman

What looks to be the ‘easy path’ is really the difficult path.

“Mike, that makes little sense, what are you talking about?”

Watch humanity.

Seriously, watch humanity, including what I call ‘ business
opportunity grasshoppers’, people who jump from opportunity to
opportunity every few months.

Humanity seeks to make money. Have you ever met a person who
‘made money’?

We don’t make or print money, we EARN MONEY.

More than that, we even attract money, more on this in a second.

Most of the globe seeks to make money through CHASING MONEY.

Chasers long for the dollar and always seem to end up with a
penny.

Chasers desire ‘get rich quick’ methods and see people as pawns
in their grand schemes.

Most people have spent time as a ‘chaser’ before realizing the
failure of that way of living.

To many, the ‘easy path’ is the longing for the dollar at any
cost. What they later discover is that path is the difficult,
long road to riches.

The journey to confident living and financial riches is going
from chasing to serving.

Read this again.

The journey to confident living and financial riches is going
from chasing to serving.

Success is service.

Success is the transferring of value and solutions to problems,
to someone else.

You attract money through organizing your knowledge, taking
action, with the aim of service/value. Profit will follow.

Chasers are selfish. They barely scrape by.

Servers are unselfish. They always have more than they need.

Those who desire to serve have something even more important
than money.

Inner peace. There’s a inner peace you receive through service.

Service is based on one of nature’s greatest laws. The LAW of
sowing and reaping.

Lose yourself into your prospects and customers.

Create real value for them. LOVERAGE them.

As you commit to this ‘way’, you’ll also see an increase in your
character and self esteem.

We all have a ‘get rich quick’ side of us. Beware of it.
Sometimes you don’t even see it, though it’s there.

Slow down. Relax. Allow yourself to plant success seeds in your
life and business.

The harvest will happen.

Surround yourself with servers, not chasers.

What can you give today? Whom can you serve?

Love Ya! You’re The Best!

Your Coach,

Michael

Het Mike,
Another home run with this one. Sitting here reading this, I can feel the almost instantaneous difference inside me when I imagine “selling” someone a product or service versus asking them “how can I be of assistance” and seeing if my product or service might be of benefit to them.
Thanks,
Michael

That distinction you made about Servers vs. Chasers as a trait in business people is so valuable. I hope to serve better and bring more value to my market with this new knowledge. Thanks.

Multiple points I wish I’d understood 20 years ago.
I wonder if this is the ‘fuel’ behind those that are admired for wonder-inspiring inventions/adaptations like the light bulb and assembly line?
Personal satisfaction from having redered service would seem to fulfill the gnawing need represented in the current office environment…

Mike,

Great message.

When we start to leverage our true strengths to create the most valuable result for others, it’s not long before people are beating down your doors for the service you provide.

The key is narrowing your focus to the area that you have the most intuitive strength in to the exclusion of everything else.

Keep up the great work and here’s to Your LifetoSuccess,

This is so true!

I read somewhere also that you cannot help others without having a positive effect on your own endeavours i.e., by helping others you will surely also help yourself.

I will work on my language to that of service rather than a chase.

thank you as ever…………

Wow! That is something I pray for everyday. Who can I serve? Who can I help with my product and business? Whos life can I make a little brighter? I just never thought of it in those terms before. Now I don’t have to feel like I’m not “with it” in not wanting to chase the all mighty dollar as my main reason for having a business! Thanks again!

Pam Murphy March 25, 2008 at 2:28 pm

There is a huge difference between selling and serving. Serving others gives you riches beyond money. I have often found myself at odds with others in the nutrition business because of our philosophical differences regarding selling and serving. Businesses built on selling don’t have the foundation those built on serving have. Right on Mike!

Kathy March 25, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Hi Mike, I love the way you always manage to put things in a simple easy to understand way. I have been the grasshopper and the chaser and you are right, they are far from being the easy get rich quick way. I have now become the server, helping those with self-esteem, self-love and empowerment issues, I want to help people understand that there is help and it begins with yourself. Keep up the great work Mike, you truley are an inspiration!

Thanks Mike for your intelligent commentary and advise.

Also Thanks for the chance to post a back link to my blog

I invite readers to view and to make comments on how I could improve content. Or otherwise to contact me if they need some help with researching. (New Zealand or otherwise)
I recently completed a reading or source bibliography on African American sources for the 1930s. This did stretch me studying on line from New Zealand but was fun!

Jeanne May March 25, 2008 at 5:42 pm

I completely agree with you Michael. A problem that can surface is when the focus is on serving and you find yourself with very little money. Sometimes that’s when servers can become chasers because they need money in the short term to survive and to continue serving.

I am all about planting success seeds in my life and business. And, it is true, you have to commit to what you want to do and not move from one opportunity to another. You will lose focus and people will sense that.

Lose yourself into your prospects and customers.
Create real value for them. LOVERAGE them.

LOVERAGE Them —- Sharing this with my team ASAP.

L Shields March 25, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Mike you are so right, I have come to that realization
in my life myself. Not only do I want to serve I want to
give Gratitude at all time for being in a position to serve.

When I first started in this industry, I remember feeling
you had to be chasers to keep up with what the company consider success levels, “talk to any thing breathing”
I never felt comfortable with that and know that somthing about it didnot connect with who I am.

Thanks so much for all you give!

Shields

Mike,
You are a wonderful inspiration. Thank you for your uplifting and insightful messages. I have always made a point of putting my customers’ welfare first, and get enjoyment from the responses I receive. I have worked with others who put customers’ financial future in peril, which was encouraged by the corporation. It promted me to resign. It may take time for customers to realize you have their interest at heart, due to the ruthless individuals they encountered in the past.
Thank you, Mike, for all you do to encourage serving and not chasing.

Having a passion to help people puts you in the driver seat with those words from Mike. I’m in the healthcare/IT business and the only way I would ever help myself earn money, is by making sure the client is always helped first. There are many simple ways of doing that… it’s really not hard to give 100% customer service to their satisfaction and exceed their expectation at the same time.

Thanks Mike…this reminds me a lot of the chaser being something like the proverbial “used car salesman”, the one who just wants to sell you a car, not caring if the car isn’t what he says it is nor if it is really the car you need. We need to put more caring in our daily lives and the people we deal with…thank you for the reminder…you’ve given so many of us the daily “caffine” we need to get ourselves moving.

This is the the law that Jesus taught his disciples! Let the greatest among you become the servant of all. If you want to become great, humble yourself (do what most are unwilling to do)and God will exalt you in His timing. This was a great read and I would love to repost!

Olufemi March 26, 2008 at 9:05 am

I don’t know how I’d change my thinking to this new idea – totally different from what I know previuosly. God bless you Mike! I’ll try the new approach. Hopefully, it should work!

Warren Whitlock March 26, 2008 at 9:17 am

A vital message that all of us need from time to time.

No matter how many successes I’ve achieved through follwoing these principles, I still see the same “shiny objects” of the get rich schemes and biz ops.

Entirely possible to loose focus with a single trip to the email IN box these days.

We have to dream big, plan for greatness.. but then choos a course and work it. Once you get that feeling that you know you are doing a great service to others, that should be your focus.

Now excuse me while I get back to serving

Taylor E. Stevens March 26, 2008 at 12:22 pm

Mike,
Beautiful! It is my daily prayer, so powerfully articulated by you…” How may I serve?” Part of the integration for me has also been releasing the powerful religious notion that people who serve SHOULD do so with no thought of return. I found myself blocking the flow of my own prosperity by limiting core beliefs surrounding materiality/life of service. I do not serve FOR money, and money serves me in my service of the Higher Good.
Thanks for the re-minder, and blessings in your continued life of valued service!

Roger Nuss March 26, 2008 at 1:55 pm

Great insight that should be practiced EVERY day!

That is a great concept,

Earn money – not Make money
Comes down to making oneself & service Valuable, the money will pour in afterward.

Thanks Mike –

Your messages are always so clear and inspiring. It is such a subtle shift in attitude at times from wanting the sale to wanting to give value to the customer, but it makes all the difference! If you love and believe in what you are doing, you need only share the benefits in service to your customer and the sales will happen without chasing.

Walter March 27, 2008 at 4:14 pm

I have been thinking about what business is really – from a perspective way way way far away from the everyday operations and stock gyrations and everything that people seem to think makes up business – the one common denominator that business breaks down into in all cases is one person – group or organization serving another person – group or organization or the population in general with either a products or a service or ideas –

If you or your company stops providing a service to anyone then you are no longer in business or you must shift your focus of what you do in some way so that you are in the serving mode once again – so from far away what we are here on planet earth are individual people or groups of people serving other people or groups of people –

There can be no other way of looking at all of this activity and if what is being done in any area of activity is not serving someone in some way that activity will sooner or later cease to take place!

linda March 30, 2008 at 7:53 pm

You are so right Mike – as always!

I hear this from my business partners all the time!

The most successful people in business are not those who are focused on THEIR success, but those whose primary focus is helping OTHERS succeed !

I love this quote from Zig Ziglar ; “You can have everything in life that you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want.”

Emrick March 30, 2008 at 9:20 pm

I completely agree with you! Chasers are indeed selfish in their intention to take accumulate and not helping the world. they barely get by, or are not satisfied ever. Servers are indeed unselfish. They always have more than they need, because they fill a need for people.
